One word. Everything follows from it.
A small studio in Kuala Lumpur took a name in 2013 and meant it literally. Twelve years and a self-driving car later, the word is still the centre of gravity. Every system we build exists to let people make more, with less standing in the way.
Enable people
to create.
What began as helping a designer ship a website is now helping a port run autonomously, a factory sense without cameras, a city understand its own movement. The act is the same. The scale has changed.
Built from a root, not an imported answer.
We named the company reka because creation is the act underneath all the other acts. Every tool we build, every system we deploy, every frontier we pursue traces back to that single intent: give people the means to make what they imagine.
But creation, the kind that holds, does not begin with a template. It begins at the root of the problem, the actual structure of what is broken or missing, before any tool is named. In Latin, radix means root. Radical, in our sense, is not recklessness. It is the discipline of going to the origin before reaching for an answer.
That is why we do original research, own our own intellectual property, and build for the physical world specifically. The physical world is harder, less forgiving, and more underserved by technology than the digital one. It is also where creation has the most consequence.
We map the domain and the physics before we name any technology. The tool follows the problem, not the other way around.
We say what the timeline actually supports. What works today, what is coming, and what is still speculative are three different things and we treat them that way.
Every experiment closes back to something a client can run. If it cannot, we stop. Nothing here is theoretical for its own sake.
We fund our own research and own the intellectual property. We are not an integrator assembling other people's tools.
In 2016, three years after opening as a design studio, we drove from Melaka to Kuala Lumpur on the PLUS Highway with no one at the wheel.
No purpose-built vehicle. No imported platform. A retrofit kit, a processing board we had designed ourselves, and an autonomy stack we had written from scratch. It was Malaysia's first self-driving car on open roads, and it was the moment REKA stopped being a studio.
The question we were answering was not "can a car drive itself?" That question was already being answered, expensively, by much larger organisations in other countries. Our question was harder and more useful: can you engineer reliable autonomy with what you actually have, in conditions you actually face, on a budget that makes commercial sense?
Answering it required us to build from the root: our own silicon, our own sensor fusion, our own understanding of edge computing, real-time decision systems, spatial mapping, and what it means for a machine to know where it is and what to do about it. We were not consumers of that knowledge. We produced it.
In 2017 we renamed the company REKA Inisiatif. Same root word. The initiative had simply gotten much larger.
// Malaysia's first self-driving car on open roads
That car built everything that came after.
Autonomous driving did not lead to an autonomous driving company. It led to REKA Inisiatif. Every technology we built for the vehicle found a second life in a different problem. The know-how accumulated in making a machine see, think, and act in the physical world turned out to be precisely the knowledge that most industries were missing.
What follows is not a pivot. It is a repurposing: the deliberate application of hard-won engineering knowledge to a wider set of physical-world problems.
Private Spatial Sensing
The sensor fusion and edge inference work became a sensing platform that maps physical spaces without identifying anyone. Data never leaves the building.
Applied AI for business data
Pattern recognition and real-time inference built for machines were repurposed to read patterns in business data and surface what actually matters.
Intelligent Automation
The architecture for monitoring a vehicle's decisions in real time became the architecture for monitoring automated workflows, keeping humans in the loop.
Robotics & Autonomous Machines
The complete autonomy stack, hardware, perception, planning, and teleoperation, became a repeatable system for deploying autonomous machines in bounded domains.
An independent commercial R&D company. A different animal from what most of this region has.
Most serious R&D in Southeast Asia lives in government institutes, university labs, or the captive research arms of large corporations. The privately held company that funds its own frontier research, owns the intellectual property, and commercialises the output without a government grant or a corporate parent is uncommon here.
One of the very few independent commercial R&D companies in Southeast Asia building AI specifically for the physical world. Not a consultancy. Not a lab. A company that runs its own research, owns what it builds, and sells the output to organisations that want technology they can trust.
Where the research lives.
REKA's work sits in four divisions. When something we build proves repeatable, it graduates into a product at AntaraX.
Sensing the physical world
Sensing and digitalisation of spaces, assets and movement, from the car's sensors to smart-city and crowd sensing.
Autonomy and robotics
Autonomous vehicles, robots and physical automation, built on the open Autoware stack. This work stays with REKA.
AI-driven applications
Applied AI and large language models that do real work inside a business, private where the data has to stay.
Digital transformation
Humanising technology: changing how people and organisations work, so new systems are actually used.
Founded as REKA Studios
Graphic and web design for Malaysian businesses. The name, the mission, and the instinct already in place.
Malaysia's first self-driving car on open roads
CRETA: Melaka to KL on the PLUS Highway. Our own hardware and autonomy stack.
Renamed REKA Inisiatif
The studio became an R&D company. Same root word, larger initiative.
Smart-city sensing, Murata
Applied spatial sensing to smart-city problems. Built out the ASEAN sensing platform.
Frost & Sullivan recognition
Recognised for Best Crowd Analytics. Active across Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Autoware Foundation member
Formalised contribution to the open-source autonomy stack. AMRs running in Singapore.

REKA, in short.
What does REKA do?
REKA is a technology R&D and innovation partner. We help companies see where technology can move them forward, prove it on their own data, then build and run it. We work in four ways: consulting, custom build and R&D, managed AI, and intelligent automation.
Where is REKA based?
REKA Inisiatif Sdn Bhd is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It started in 2013 as REKA Studios and has worked with clients in Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.
Is REKA the same as Reka AI?
No. REKA Inisiatif is a Malaysian technology R&D company founded in 2013. It is not affiliated with Reka AI, the AI research lab in the United States.
Does REKA only do AI?
No. AI is one tool among many, and it isn't always the answer. REKA also builds sensing, robotics and autonomous systems, software and hardware, and chooses whatever fits the problem.
How is REKA related to AntaraX?
AntaraX is REKA's AI product line. When something REKA has built proves repeatable, it can become an AntaraX product, such as Yara for jobs and work orders. Find them at antarax.ai.
Let's build something
worth keeping.
